AIDS2010 Recap - 7/15-21

TakeANumber.org is just returning from the International AIDS Conference, where we joined with 200 organizations

from around the world to organize a massive thousand-person march to the opening ceremony. We carried with us a strong message that people with AIDS and allies will not sit silently by while governments break their promises to fund AIDS programs. We declared, in our signs, banners, chants and speeches, "Broken promises kill! No retreat. Fund AIDS." And governments - especially the US government - took notice.

At the US Social Forum 6/20-22:

  • Take action! Join a die-in to show the cost of Obama's broken promises, and remind everyone that we're all AIDS activists. It will be outside Cobo Hall plenary room at 9pm tonight. More information here.
  • Join a workshop! We've got three great ones, all on Thursday. Learn about them here.

Chicago, IL 5/29- Emergency rally to demand that US keep promise to fund Global AIDS

Memorial Day is a time when many communities commemorate those lost in wartime. This weekend, President Obama will be in Chicago. So TakeANumber.org and our allies in Chicago are commemorating those we have lost to AIDS with a protest on Saturday May 29 - at Obama's house. We're doing this because we're out of options, and there's an emergency that's happening. We need to make sure Obama hears that treating AIDS is preventing AIDS, and his strategy of undermining HIV treatment will not end AIDS, won't benefit women, and overall will lead to the unnecessary death of millions.

Saturday, May 29th

5:30 PM at 57th and Greenwood (near Obama's house), Chicago, IL

New York, NY 5/13- RALLY TO DEMAND FULL FUNDING TO FIGHT GLOBAL AIDS!

President Obama and his rich donors will dined on caviar and siped champagne at a $50,000-per-person fundraiser in NYC on May 13th. Outside the fundraiser, AIDS activists demonstrated to demand that he keep his promise to fund AIDS treatment around the world. Instead of increasing the number of people on treatment, like he promised, Obama is cutting funding for global AIDS, and people are being forced onto waiting lists for AIDS drugs. These people are sick, and without treatment, they will die. And the US promised them treatment!
