AIDS Activist Disrupt Obama Speech at Fundraiser

New York City - Unfurling banners and signs reading “Obama: Broken Promises Kill No Retreat Fund AIDS” a group of AIDS activists disrupted President Obama’s speech at a Democratic Party fundraiser tonight at the Roosevelt Hotel 45 East 45th Street (at Madison Ave.)

The action was in a response to the President’s failure to make a concrete commitment of US funding to the Global Fund on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The protest organizers denounced President Obama for breaking his campaign promise to fully fund fighting AIDS globally, and called on him to contribute $6 billion over 3 years to the Global Fund.

This protest part of a Global Week of Action to demand full funding for global AIDS, as called for by South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign, and coincides with the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit in the City.

On Monday, AIDS activists led a protest of over a hundred people demanding that President Obama keep his campaign pledge to fully fund the fight against global AIDS.
